There doesn't appear to be an Elbow consensus: they are their own band; they are the Coldplay it's OK to like; they are the Talk Talk for people who've never heard Talk Talk (or Catherine Wheel); they are somewhere between Supertramp and Superchunk; they are part of a succession of over-introspective, twaddle-peddling British rock bands. They are most of these things — the positive things, at least — at various points. Elbow has released the title track as a single from their rapturously received third album, “Leaders Of The Free World”. Whilst never comfortable with the idea of being a ‘political’ band Elbow have written a single which is a subtle yet scathing attack on the Neo Conservative agenda and general “Let them eat cake” attitude of the Western world’s politicians, is borne of lead singer Guy Garvey’s stringent and well documented opposition to the Iraq war and general political dislocation between the people and their supposed leaders.
