Bat For Lashes "What's A Girl To Do"

The Beastie Boys "The Rat Cage"

Despite being around since 1981, Beastie Boys still know how to mix things up. The legendary hip hop/rock/punk trio have just released their seventh full length album, The Mix-Up, via long time label Capitol Records. The reasons behind their success is simple: each album has its own distinct sounds, vibes and lyrics. However, this time around, what makes the album so fresh is the absence of one of those key elements: lyrics. The Mix-Up is comprised entirely of original Beastie Boys instrumentals.

"The Rat Cage" is the latest video to be released from The Mix-Up. Shot entirely in black and white, all three of the boys make cameos throughout. Using the spy motif, the video follows the mysterious transactons between the sunglassed bandmates. Although what's being passed around isn't clear, what is clear is the fact that whatever it is, won't stay in one place.

Nine Black Alps "Shot Down (Live @ the Old Blue Last Pub)

Wednesday of this week saw Nine Black Alps packing themselves, a huge sound system and a hundred other people into a tiny, hot and sweaty upstairs room in the Old Blue Last pub in London. They were celebrating the release of their single "Burn Faster" by playing two sets in one night and getting everyone drunk! They filmed the show and here's some footage of the finale, "Shot Down". Enjoy!

Santo & Johnny "Sleep Walk" (1959)

Santo & Johnny [MySpace / Wikipedia] were an American rock and roll duo from Brooklyn.

Santo Farina was Johnny's older brother. He played the lap steel guitar as a youth, and then taught Johnny to play the electric guitar. They began recording in 1959 with Trinity Records' "Sleep Walk", written with the help of their mother.

"Sleep Walk" became a regional hit, and was then released nationally, becoming a #1 pop hit. The follow-up. "Tear Drop", was another hit, though their LP, Santo & Johnny, was less successful. They continued recording and releasing albums until 1976 with little pop success, after which Santo began a solo career.

"Sleep Walk" was originally covered by Betsy Brye in 1958 (it had lyrics as well), but has been also covered by The Shadows, The Ventures, Jake Shimabukuro, Larry Carlton, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Deftones, Chet Atkins, Danny Gatton, and Joe Satriani. Indie group Modest Mouse also covered the music, this time using the lyrics and entitling the song "Sleepwalking".

Santo & Johnny were an instrumental guitar duo best known for their hauntingly atmospheric instrumental 'Sleepwalk' which entered Billboard's Top 40 on August 17th, 1959. It rose to the No. 1 position for two weeks in September (the 21st and the 28th) and remained in the 'Top 40' list until November 9th.

First Clip From Bob Dylan Biopic Hits the Web

The first clip from the highly anticipated Todd Haynes-directed Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There has surfaced on YouTube. The black-and-white footage depicts the first meeting between a young Dylan (portrayed here by actress Cate Blanchett) and beat poet Allen Ginsberg (played by comedian David Cross). As we reported last fall, Blanchett is just one of six actors who will channel their inner Bob Dylans to tell the singer/songwriter’s story — Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Marcus Carl Franklin and Ben Whishaw will also play the role. In the leaked scene, Blanchett’s Dylan-esque hair, sunglasses and gruff voice help make her convincing, but there’s no hiding those feminine cheekbones. I’m Not There is slated to hit theaters September 21.

Nick Drake "Way To Blue"

From the new Drake rarities collection Family Tree, the elemental orchestration that baffled my teenage ears on the original "Way to Blue" is replaced by sparse piano, not unlike on the John Lennon demos the Beatles would flesh out for their Anthology series. Produced by the Estate of Nick Drake and Gavin Bush, the new video for "Way to Blue" has the weepy nostalgia of the clips for those "new" Beatles songs. Drake loved the deep blue sea, we're shown in images of the late English folkie's younger self swimming, playing in the surf, and boating. With time-lapse shots of clouds speeding by overhead, the video can at times be emotionally manipulative in a way Drake's own emotionally fraught songwriting seldom was. It still hurts, though, to see how the singer's face never looked quite right with a smile on it-- even when he was a small child.
